What is Stump Grinding?
A stump grinder is a machine that rotates a heavy plate with fixed teeth to shave a stump down, usually 6 inches below ground, depending on access, customer request and obstacles.
Why Stump Grind?
Stumps left above ground level can be unsightly
Some tree stumps can sprout new growth which can require regular pruning, stump grinding doesn't always prevent this regrowth but if it does persist it can be trimmed or mowed over until it dies out.
Depending on the location, a stump can be a trip hazard
Grinding the stump below ground level allows grass or other plants to grow
Considerations:
Limited access, obstacles or utilities may prevent the ability to safely grind a stump
Stump grinding can produce a large quantity of mixed dirt and wood shavings which can be removed, left at the site to decay or repurposed by the customer for other landscaping needs
Unknown obstacles: What is buried under a tree or its roots is unknown to an operator and even to a homeowner. It is important to let an operator know if you have unmarked sprinkler, irrigation or drainage lines in the area of a stump
